On May 20, 2025, SED organized the National Round of the Tatevatsi Economics Olympiad (TEO) at the American University of Armenia (AUA), bringing together over 70 of Armenia’s top-performing students. Having achieved 88% or higher in the School Round, participants advanced to compete at the National Round stage of the Olympiad.

2025 Tatevatsi Economics Olympiad: National Round

The National Round of Tatevatsi Economics Olympiad was composed of two stages. The competition commenced with a rigorous one-hour multiple-choice written exam designed specifically to assess participants’ economic reasoning, analytical abilities, and understanding of fundamental economic principles. This initial stage was crafted to test students' knowledge on a wide range of topics, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, international trade, and economic theory. Participants were required to think critically and apply their knowledge under time constraints, which added an additional layer of complexity to the examination process. The top 16 performers advanced to the next phase: oral interviews conducted by a distinguished jury comprised of esteemed academics, influential policymakers, and financial experts.

The 16 finalists were formally recognized as National Round winners with exceptional theoretical knowledge and practical skills in economics. The finalists have demonstrated a remarkable ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, showcasing their analytical and critical thinking skills. Their journey to this point involved navigating through challenging economic questions and engaging with contemporary economic issues.

The National Round featured a distinguished jury composed of esteemed experts from leading Armenian universities and key institutions. The panel included Sevag Agop (American University of Armenia), Avag Avanesyan (Ministry of Finance), Gurgen Aslanyan (AUA), Eva Bazinyan (Armenian State University of Economics), Vache Gabrielyan (AUA), Aram Ghazaryan (Center for Behavioral Decisions), Mane Harutyunyan (Central Bank of Armenia), Karlen Khachatryan (Yerevan State University), Hayk Sargsyan (Central Bank of Armenia), and Mariam Voskanyan (Russian-Armenian University).

Together, these professionals brought a wealth of knowledge and diverse perspectives, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of participants’ economic understanding.

What’s Next

The journey doesn’t stop here. From August 21–24, 2025, the 5 outstanding winners will proudly represent Armenia at the International Economics Olympiad, hosted this year in the historic city of Olympia, Greece. This prestigious event is not just a competition; it is a remarkable opportunity for these talented individuals to showcase their analytical skills and economic acumen on a global platform.

During the four-day event, the winners will engage with their peers from various countries, all of whom share a passion for economics. This immersive experience will not only allow them to demonstrate their capabilities but also to learn from the diverse perspectives and methodologies of young economists from around the world.

In addition to the competitive aspect, the Olympiad will serve as a unique networking opportunity. The participants will have the chance to forge connections with fellow young economists, educators, and industry professionals, which may lead to collaborations, mentorships, and friendships that extend far beyond the event itself.

Their journey to Olympia will not only enhance their personal growth but will also contribute to the broader development of economic education in Armenia, fostering a new generation of economists who are equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
